Rev John Duffus arrived in New Zealand from England as a private citizen, having left the church before emigrating. He bought land and went farming at Hihi, near Mangonui. On November 11, 1860, when a place of worship was opened in Mangonui, Rev Duffus offered his services gratis until a stated minister was found.

The baptisms listed were extracted out of Rev John Duffus's private book by Mr W.I. Ball on June 15, 1871.
