The collection consists of papers relating to Clarke's experiences in South Africa as a Trooper with the IX New Zealand Contingent. There is a 16 (double-sided) page copy of his diary, covering his voyage to and from South Africa, and his service there, from 12 March to 5 August 1902. The diary includes a copy of the poem 'Plugger Bill'. There are copies of two letters he wrote at Vereeniging while in camp, a seven page letter to his sister Katie (15 June 1902), and a four page letter to his sister Jennie (17 June 1902). There is also a copy of tickets to the 'Borough of Mornington Social to our Returned Troopers', 22 August 1902, which includes a list of the servicemen's names.
