Jackson joined the 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force as a stretcher bearer. He served with the NZ Field Ambulance at Gallipoli. A photograph he took of Private Richard A Henderson of the New Zealand Field Ambulance carring a wounded man from the battlefield with the aid of a donkey was the model for the painting by Sapper Horace Moore-Jones known as "Simpson and His Donkey".

The collection inculdes two diaries written by Jackson, in 1914 & 1915; a letter to his parents 8 July 1915 describing the landing at Anzac Cove and conditions at Gallipoli; photographs of Egypt and Gallipoli including that of Private Henderson and his donkey "Murphy"; and corespondence and newspaper clippings regarding the painting by Sapper H. Moore-Jones and the controversies about it.
