Description:

The Christchurch Civic Trust is concerned with improving and regenerating the environment in places where people live and work. It set ou to promote higher enviornment standards in and immediately around the city of Christchurch. The trust was formed from a movement to save Canterbury University's former inner-city campus and had its first meeting on 24 May 1965. The Trust's constitution was drafted by Alan Brassington (1902-1981) and has been used as a model for civic trusts formed later in other parts of New Zealand. The trust is recognised is its representation on local body committees and working and studying groups. Successful campaigns have included preserving the old Government buildings, old Normal School in Cramner Square, Lyttelton Timeball, Antigua boatsheds and the Peacock Foundation in Hagley Park.
