The Canterbury District Railway Committee was set up in July 1922 under the auspices of the Canterbury Progress League with representatives of the Railways Department, the Industrial Association, and commercial and farming interests '...for the purpose of advising and assisting the Railway Department in the solution of local difficulties which are encountered from time to time.' The functions of the Committee were later absorbed by the Canterbury Progress League.

The minute book contains details of the Committee's activities from the first meeting held 26 September 1922 to 2 August 1926, and includes newspaper cuttings and reports of matters concerning the operation of the railways in Canterbury such as the Mount Somers railway derailment in 1923.
