Description:

The New Zealand notes of a journey taken to the River Taipo, Westland, and back by William Christian, Arthur Hopper and J.V. Hopps from Christchurch, 16 December 1868 to 6 January 1869, transcribed from the original letter of William Christian home to London.

Arthur Hopper, a master at Christchurch Boys' High School, undertook this journey to the gold diggings along the River Taipo near Kumara, Westland, in order to visit relatives who were digging for gold at the time. The others accompanied Hopper in order to view the mountain scenery of Arthur's Pass. On the return journey Arthur Hopper was drowned in the Otira River when the coach he was travelling on became jammed in some boulders and overturned while negotiating the Otira Gorge. This is a photocopied typescript copied from the original about 1950 by Frederick Newnham Christian in London, and supplied by Mrs R.L. Harpham, Tauranga, 7 June 1979. It includes transcriptions of the 'Lyttelton Times' reports of the drowning of Arthur Hopper and the inquest, 6 and 7 January 1869.
