The recollections of Mr James Ashworth of 'Harleston', Sefton, North Canterbury, as recounted in September 1918, and a postscript dated 18 August 1919.

James Ashworth came to Canterbury with his parents in 1853 from a time pioneering at Geelong in Victoria, Australia. His father moved to North Canterbury in 1859 and commenced a pioneer carrying business. In 1878 James purchased the family's stone homestead near Saltwater Creek and built up a property of 2,500 acres, 'Harleston', which he continued to farm until he died 18 July 1932, aged 87.
