Wellington Philosophical Society was reconstituted in 1867 from the defunct New Zealand Society. James Hector was active in promoting the re-establishment of the Society and a meeting was held of the original New Zealand Society Trustees which agreed to the re establishment. The first meeting also agreed to a change of name to the Philosophical Society and incorporation with the New Zealand Institute. Hector was deeply involved with the administration of the Philosophical Society for many years.
Please note that while in theory this agency administered a specific function in its own right during this period that in reality it was administered by James Hector (later Sir James) through the offices of the Colonial Museum
