Ian Church (1941-2013) grew up in Port Chalmers. He took a degree at the University of Otago, was a teacher for 21 years, and then Archivist at Wanganui Regional Museum for four years. In 1987 he returned to Port Chalmers to be Curator of the town’s museum. Church wrote a number of historical books, many about the history of Port Chalmers.

n.d. ca early 1990s. Supporting material includes A History of the Observation Point and Back Beach Area of Pt Chas, by Ian Church, 1990. The history was originally written for Port Otago Ltd to clarify the history of the area and it includes photocopies of photographs and historical document. There is also a report on the economic and social consequences for Port Chalmers when the shipping of meat was diverted to Timaru and Bluff, 1969, and extracts from the Report of the Transport Commission on the decision to divert all South Island export meet through Timaru and Bluff, Mar 8 1968
