Background

Maatua Whangai commenced nationally in 1983. A proposal document for the setting up of the Maatua Whangai Support Group in Otara and Mangere. The purpose of this support group was to provide an adult support person (like a grandparent) to accompany youth appearing in court without any parental or other family support. They operated out of the Otara Wardens Building and duties were done at the Court in Otahuhu.

The proposal document suggests coordination between Mangere and Otara court support workers and calls for regular meetings, liaison and the appointment of a co-ordinator. General guidelines for the behaviour of Maatua Whangai in the court environment are listed.
