Biography: Charles Hammond and his family immigrated to Otago on the George Canning which arrived in Port Chalmers 28 November 1857. His family consisted of wife Sarah, and children Dinah, Martha, Richard Lates and Thomas Herbert. Sarah died ca 1858 (or1861?) and Charles died 1865. Dinah married James Galbraith about 1860.

Scope and Content: Photocopies of three letters found in a house in Port Chalmers: the letters are from Charles Hammond Mount Pleasant, North Port Chalmers, Otago: (a) to Sam Bate, Glee Hill, Near Ludlow, Salop [England], 23 May 1860; (b) to his brother-in-law, 28 August 1860; (c) to his brother, 25 December 1960. The letters tell of his life in the Port Chalmers area, his work as a sawyer, about cultivating his land, and news about his family; also typed transcript of the above letters.
