Typescript document describing the life of Nora Katie Brown, local resident of Pukekohe written in 1983. Archive relates to the O’Connor, Maxwell and Morrin families of the Franklin District. Contains photocopy of a photograph of Nora as an 11 year old and again at age 85.
Nora was born at Whangarata, near Tuakau on 21 October 1894. She discusses daily life, early days at Onewhero and attending Onewhero School. Her family moved to Pukekohe in July 1907 where she went to Pukekohe School and later attended Auckland Girls Grammar School in Howe Street, Auckland, catching the train to town every week.
Nora talks about her parent’s background and life in Essex, England. Mentions the Flu Epidemic of 1919, The Waikato Dairy Company and the formation of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, working for solicitor Mr Grierson in the time before he was Mayor of Pukekohe.
Discusses the WWII army camps at the Race Course ground, Pukekohe, at Helvetia and Wesley College. Describes seeing U.S. soldiers during her time working at the Recordings Department in the Power Board buildings.
Nora was President of the Pukekohe Horticultural Society during the 1950s and 1960s and was involved in the decorations of the town for the visit by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1953. Nora served as a member of the Auckland Festival Society during the 1960s and was a member of the Franklin Historical Society. She worked with Nona Morris on the Pukekohe Borough Council Golden Jubilee booklet and was involved in interviewing the older residents of the area.
Nora travelled widely and recalls sight-seeing in London during the time of the First World War, her trips to Europe and South America and the Pacific.
