Biography:
Murray Gladstone Thomson was the son of Peter Thomson, founder of the Dunedin Naturalists Club [see ZARCH 153]. He shared his father’s interest in natural history and ethnography, and wrote essays on these subjects which were published in the Otago Daily Times. Thomson became well known for his collection of Maori artefacts from Murdering Beach (Whareakeake). At the age of 90 he wrote his reminiscences A pakeha’s Recollections, ed Alfred Eccles, A H & A W Reed, Dunedin, 1944.

Scope & Content:
Essays by Murray G Thomson include “The Fishermen at the Kaik”, typescript about the author living at Kelvin Grove, Murdering Beach, as a child; farming and fishing in the area, and the relationship with the local Maoris, n.d. (7pp); “Weller’s Buildings”, typescript about the early buildings at Otakou. The item is signed in ink “M G Thomson, 1.3.35”, 1935 (4pp); “A Harbour Episode”, typescript about a trip on the harbour with a Mr Morrison in 1863, in which they nearly drowned, 1933, (5pp); “The Old Whaling Station at Otakau (No 2)”, n.d. ca 1939 (3pp); “A Maori Track & An Afterthought”, typescript with handwritten ink title and corrections in ink and pencil, 1933 (2pp); and a hand drawn topographical map of the Otago coastline from Haywards Point to Long Beach.
