Description:

Spiral bound volume of photocopied meeting minutes of the Mangere Central School Committee from April 1886 to 20 May 1907. Names listed include Chairman Mr M. M. Kirkbride, Messrs F. Pegler; W. Westney; J. Scott and C. Wesler [sp?]
Includes meeting on 27 April 1886 during which members of the Mangere School Committee elected Mr W. F. Massey as Chairman. Regular committee members included Mr W. F. Massey, Mr Smith, Mr Gooseman, Mr Wallace and Mr Dawson. At the “Annual Meeting of Householder held April 23rd 1889” Mr Maunders moved and Mr Rosser seconded that the Committee do their utmost to have a school erected on the Onehunga side of the Mangere Mountain carried.” (Mangere Bridge School) Meeting minutes contain information regarding the operation of the schools, fundraising, school property including the school well and school garden, teachers, proposed increase of number of days for annual leave and general business.

Additional Information
On the 1st of September 1859 a school was opened at Mangere. The school was initially housed in temporary accommodation but in December 1861 a purpose-built schoolroom with teacher's accommodation was erected. A new school building was later opened at the Mangere School on the 19th of February 1881. The first public school in the area, this is the origin of what later became known as the Mangere Central School
