The Ayrshire Association of Otago was formed at a meeting to discuss the idea which was held in the Provincial Hotel, 5 August 1875. It was to be an association of the natives of Ayrshire now living in Otago. Office bearers were elected that night. And a committee formed to draft rules for the management of the Association. The association appears to have been largely social, although a Relief Committee was formed to which people could apply for financial help. Social activities included annual picnics, sports, and gatherings to celebrate the Queen’s birthday and Robbie Burn’s anniversary.
