Book covering aspects of the early history of Auckland including early Maori settlements, Judges Bay; Hobson Bay; the Tamaki district focusing on Panmure, Otahuhu, Papatoetoe, Manurewa and Papakura. Details the naming of Otahuhu, Fairburn’s Claim, the establishment of the Fencible settlements and Canal Reserve in Otahuhu. Further topics include early transport; clubs, education; churches; farming; earthworks; Maori Land Wars; Otahuhu Military Camp, and the existence of the Hospital Camp during the Maori Land Wars.
Information on public buildings; the Centenial celebrations of Otahuhu in 1948; street names and local industries including the Freezing Works, R. W. Hellaby; Westfield Freezing Works, the Fertiliser Works, Taniwha Products. Contains early photographs of local clubs, Kings College and Otahuhu College. Includes maps.
