A.M.D.B. (Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Board): Manukau Purification Plant
The Manukau Sewage Purification Works were opened on 24 September 1960. The Mangere plant helped to clean up the severely polluted Mangere Inlet. Unfortunately, the during the operation of the plant, harmful effluent was discharged into the Manukau Harbour. The pollution from this discharge destroyed fishing grounds, disfigured a large part of the Mangere shoreline, and led to years of odour and midge problems for local residents. The problems with smells and midges were to recur for many years. Local bathing beaches were also polluted. After the opening of the ponds a Mangere Residents' Protest Committee was formed to seek improvements and/or compensation. In July of 1983 The Manukau Sewage Purification Works were reopened after substantial upgrading. Despite the improvements, problems with odours and midges continued for many years. In July 1992 Watercare Services Limited took over responsibility from the ARC for the provision of bulk water and wastewater services within the Auckland region, including management of the Manukau Sewage Purification Works, now known as the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.
