Level of description:

Reference number:

MNP OH 30h

Sir Barry Curtis held the position of Mayor of Manukau City for 24 years. In all he served the area for nearly five decades. This is part eight in a series of interviews undertaken by Dionne Christian, with Sir Barry, at his home on 29 June 2011.

The series comprises eight interviews, 30a to 30h.

In this interview Sir Barry talks about his philosophy of social justice and the influence this had on his direction for Manukau City, the city’s unique community development model, the second runway controversy at Auckland International Airport, and his ‘open-door’ style as mayor.

He discusses the personal challenges he has faced since leaving office, which include the loss of his house due to subsidence and his relationship with the Nakhle family. He also offers his views on the creation of the Auckland ‘supercity’, the mayor of Auckland City, Len Brown and on early discussions for a three-city model, being North Shore City, Auckland City and Counties Manukau City.
