Sir Barry Curtis held the position of Mayor of Manukau City for 24 years. In all he served the area for nearly five decades. This is part two in a series of interviews undertaken by Dionne Christian, with Sir Barry, at his home on 2 March 2010.

The series comprises eight interviews, 30a to 30h.

In this interview Sir Barry talks about his training and work as a young man. He obtained a drafting, followed by a surveying cadetship with the Department of Lands and Surveys and during this time worked in Rotorua at the Koutu Survey Camp. He discusses the impact of the three years spent working in this part of the country. He continued his education at Auckland University where he completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Town Planning.
