Collection of papers, photographs, and uniform items relating to pilot and early aviation enthusiast Noel Lancelot Vale.

Collection includes pilot's flying log book (1924-1936), aviator's certificate and pilot's licences, flying training notes, uniform issue vouchers and receipts, letters and telegrams, newspaper clippings, pay and allowance documents, annaul reports for the Canterbury Aero Club (1929, 1931), demobilisation documents, railway passes, and medical fitness form. Also includes a carbon copy of a typewritten account by Noel Vale of his voyage from New Zealand to England in 1918.

Vale learned to fly with the Canterbury Aviation Company at Sockburn (later known as Wigram), Christchurch, before embarking for the United Kingdom to join the Royal Air Force in 1918. He arrived too late to take part in World War One, but remained an active member of the fledgling New Zealand Territorial Air Force (NZAF) as well as the Canterbury Aero Club throughout the inter-war years.
