Level of description:

0.26 linear metres

Reference number:

Osman Edward (Ted) Middleton, a New Zealand writer, was born in Christchurch in 1925. He began publishing stories in 1949, bringing out a pamphlet, 'Six poems' in 1951 and then publishing five overlapping collections of short stories in twenty years. In 1979 he published a volume of two short novels, 'Confessions of an Ocelot' and 'Not for a seagull'. His works encapsulate similar themes to those of Sargeson being of a vernacular critical realist tradition. Most of his narrators or main characters are working class males or children outside the centres of power in society. Middleton, based in Dunedin after he was awarded the 1970 Burns Fellowship, won several literary awards.
