Papers relating to the World War Two service in the Royal Air Force of Flight Lieutenant Cyril Alexander Ironside, 1941-1945. The papers include documentation relating to his command of the RAF Motorised Transport Pool at Bukit Timar, Singapore, 1941-February 1942. There is also an account of his escape to Java on the Empire Star, 13 February 1942. A prisoner of war of the Japanese, there is a letter written to his wife in New Zealand on release and copy of an article written about mistreatment of the prisoners of war by the Japanese witnessed by him, published in 1946.

Ironside joined the RAF in 1941 from Australia on a Short Service commission and proceeded to Malaya. After the Japanese invasion began in December, he retreated with his Motor Transport unit back to Singapore and was able to escape on the Empire Star on 13 February 1942 to Java. He was subsequently captured by the Japanese in March 1942 and placed in Soerbaja Camp. During this captivity he was brutally maltreated and witnessed much suffering. Released in 1945, he returned to New Zealand via the UK and USA to his wife. He died in 1961, following a brain haemorrage (a result of savage beatings received as a prisoner).
