Fabulous Managing Archives course

Sarah Welland, Open Polytechic of New Zealand, Wellington · 19 February 2018

The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand provides a fabulous course in managing archives titled (not surprisingly) Archives management. The course is written in a way that meets the needs of those new to archives and those with extensive experience.

It is a 20 credit NZQA-accredited course that covers archives and archival principles, purposes and environments (Module 1), acquisition, appraisal and organisation (Module 2), and accessing and maintaining archives (Module 3).

This is an online course that requires you to do about 12 hours of study a week over 16 weeks. You can work these hours around your other commitments. You also have three set assignments that are due by a certain date, and which contribute to your overall grade.

This course can be taken as a stand-alone course (you receive a certificate of proficiency) or as a course within other programmes such as the Diploma of Records and Information Management.

Archives management continues to receive positive feedback from students working in government, collecting and community archives, libraries, IT and information management, and roles in heritage research. They find it very relevant as it provides a practical introduction to key aspects of archives management that they can then apply in their own work-related situations. They also consider it as giving important context around why archives need to be appropriately managed. (Very handy for convincing stakeholders!).

Since this course is run by the Open Polytechnic, students receive helpful support to help get them up and running in an online and distance learning environment. They also receive great ongoing support from the Course Leader, who can be contacted with any archival or study-related questions. In addition, they gain free access to an extensive range of resources through the Open Polytechnic’s library, and an extensive range of course-related readings.
